Asana Recovery Team Update
Incorporating Indigenous Healing into Addiction Recovery, Plus Dress Code Reminder
Medicine Wheel and the 12 Steps
With the goal of providing culturally-based addiction treatment for Native American clients, Rickey Galloway, a case manager at Asana Recovery, recently completed training at White Bison. The Colorado-based non-profit organization, created the “Wellbriety” program to help indigenous people with recovery that goes “beyond being sober to include thriving in the community and being balanced emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually.”
“It was great learning about the Native culture and ceremonies, and how they utilize the Medicine Wheel with the 12 Steps to assist with recovery,” Rickey says. “It was insightful to learn about the culture. They were forced to change their traditions and language, so it was wonderful to learn how they are implementing strategies to rediscover and advance their culture.”
