Asana Recovery Weekly Team Update
New Mental Health Hotline, New Members of Staff, Trivia, Local Food Suggestion, and Employee Celebrations
Here is this week’s update for Asana Recovery team members:
New mental health hotline, dial 988!
The new mental health hotline launched this past week and is now live!
The 988 service offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing mental health-related distress. That includes:
thoughts of suicide
mental health or substance use crisis, or
any other kind of emotional distress
People can call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org for themselves or if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support. The 988 line serves as a universal entry point, so that no matter where you live in the United States, you can reach a trained crisis counselor who can help.
How is 988 different from 911?
The 988 hotline was established to improve access to crisis services in a way that meets our country’s growing suicide and mental health-related crisis care needs. 988 provides easier access to the Lifeline network and related crisis resources, which are distinct from the public safety purposes of 911, where the focus is on dispatching Emergency Medical Services, fire, and police as needed.
What happens when I call?
When calling 988, callers first hear a greeting message while their call is routed to the local Lifeline network crisis center based on the caller’s area code. A trained crisis counselor answers the phone, listens to the caller, understands how their problem is affecting them, provides support, and shares resources if needed. If the local crisis center is unable to take the call, the caller is automatically routed to a national backup crisis center. The Lifeline provides live crisis center phone services in English and Spanish and uses Language Line Solutions to provide translation services in over 250 additional languages for people who call.
What happens when I text?
When someone texts 988, they are responded to by a group of Lifeline crisis centers that answer both chats and texts. This service will expand over the next few years to increase local- and state-level response. Currently, texting is available in English only.
New members of the Asana Recovery team
We would like to welcome two new members of staff!
Jennifer was motivated to work in the mental health field by her family. Her mom lives with high anxiety and her little brother has autism and ADHD. She loves to spend time with them and play Minecraft with her brother. She also got started working in the addictions industry because she wants to offer support where it is needed most. She says “I like to offer support and empathy for a demographic that so often gets misrepresented and harshly criticized.”
She has a cute robo dwarf hamster named Stewy and likes to spend her free time playing chess, learning new instruments, like the acoustic guitar and ukulele, and going to the beach to journal. Jennifer is happiest when she spends time with her partner and family. She loves to get together as a group and laugh uncontrollably because of how funny they are when they are together.
At Asana Recovery, Jennifer works as a Medical Technician where she is responsible for nursing assessments, medication monitoring, and documentation. She also works with clients to provide information about their prescriptions, measure and record clients’ vital signs, and conduct client rounds.
Before joining Asana Recovery, she attended San Francisco State University for five years and earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She also minored in Human Sexuality Studies and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies.
Lupe likes to make people smile and is happiest when she is spending time with her four children. In her spare time, she enjoys making cake creations as a cake artist.
She got started in the addictions industry because helping those who go through the challenges of overcoming addiction is very rewarding to her. At Asana Recovery, she works as a Case Manager. Her duties include offering support and mentoring clients as they progress through detox and residential treatment. She works with the Clinical Director in treatment planning, responding to crises, and planning for the needs of clients. She also can be found documenting client progress and referring clients to outside service providers as needed.
