Childcare Resources for Working Parents
Everyone who was once a child probably remembers that wonderful, free-as-a-kite feeling when school let out for the summer.
However, if you’re a working parent, you probably feel torn between sharing your child’s joy and the sense of overwhelm/anxiety/exhaustion that comes with trying to coordinate care and activities for school-age children when school is out.
The struggle is real.
To help support Asana Recovery employees with children, we’ve compiled some potential resources for summer. Keep in mind, these are not recommendations based on personal experience, but ideas you can look into to see if they’ll suit your needs and requirements for your children.
YMCA of Orange County
Whether you sign your child up for a day camp or take advantage of some of the Y’s kid fitness/activity classes, the YMCA offers affordably-priced youth programs that give kids the opportunity to be with friends and stay active.
Boys and Girls Club
Boys and Girls Clubs usually offer daily drop-in activities at the clubhouse and special field trip activities like going to the swimming pool or museums. Find the Club closest to you.
Day Camps
You can find day camps for all ages and virtually every interest, from your budding artist to junior coder to every kind of athlete. The most affordable options are usually through your local recreation center, for example: Camp Costa Mesa. Rec center summer camps have the added benefit of including all the rec center activities in the daily/weekly schedule like parks and pools and sporting equipment. There may be other rec centers that are more convenient for you, so check with them.
Additionally, the pandemic opened our eyes to the option of online classes, meetings and socializing. If your child has specialized interests, you can find things like coding camps, voice lessons or even academic summer school online.
Daycare
If your child is too young for day camps and your school year daycare provider is not an option during the summer, you’ll need to find a trustworthy, credentialed infant or preschool daycare. Here are two search resources for California childcare:
Early Start
Provided through the Regional Center of Orange County, Early Start offers Early Intervention supports and services for infants and toddlers, birth to 36 months, and their families. If you qualify, it can be a great way to connect to childcare resources and learn new parenting skills. Learn more: English | Spanish | Vietnamese or call 714-796-5354.

The answer to last week’s trivia question: Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Congress recognized Decoration Day as a federal holiday in 1938. People began to refer to the holiday as Memorial Day following World War II, and the federal government adopted the Memorial Day name in 1967.
