SMART Recovery- The Power of Choice!
Using the SMART Approach as an Alternative to 12-step Programs in Recovery
SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is an alternative the 12-step model of recovery, like AA or NA. 12-step programs typically focus on surrendering to a higher power, while the SMART program instead focuses on a scientific approach to behavioral change.
The SMART approach challenges the way you think in the present so that you can address and stop destructive behaviors before they start. It supports individuals who have chosen to abstain from any type of addictive behaviors (substances or activities), by teaching how to change self-defeating thinking, emotions, and actions, and work towards long-term satisfaction and increased quality of life. Here is a description of the tools and techniques offered by each step of the 4-point program:
Point 1: Building and maintaining motivation
Point 2: Coping with urges
Point 3: Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
Point 4: Living a balanced life
SMART Recovery provides face-to-face meetings worldwide, and daily online meetings. They also have an online message board and 24/7 chat room.
Stages of change
There are five stages associated with the SMART Recovery process. Individuals may go back and forth between these stages during their recovery:
Precontemplation Stage – This stage is typically characterized by feeling pressured to seek treatment. You may feel like you want to blame others for your problems and have a feeling of hopelessness.
Contemplation Stage – This is the first step toward change and involves desiring a different life. While you may feel stuck, you can start to imagine overcoming your situation.
Preparation Stage – The preparation stage includes having a plan, despite maybe not being 100% committed to it. You may still have doubts but can benefit from encouragement from others.
Action Stage – This stage is where change happens. Here, you start changing your behaviours and using your recovery tools.
Maintenance Stage – In the maintenance stage, you might fall back to previous stages, but this is typical.
What to expect at a SMART meeting
The SMART program is abstinence-based, meaning you will be expected to not drink or do drugs at all. SMART meetings are in open format, where facilitators encourage participants to talk about their experiences and what they are finding helpful in their recovery journey. This open discussion structure differs from the structured format of 12-step meetings.
