Disaster Preparedness
National Preparedness Month is an important annual public awareness campaign in September to raise awareness about the life-saving value of being prepared for disasters and emergencies. This month-long campaign is led by FEMA's Ready Campaign and the Ad Council, to provide valuable information and resources to help individuals and communities prepare for any unforeseen events.
For 2023, the theme of National Preparedness Month is "Take Control in 1, 2, 3." This campaign focuses specifically on helping older adults prepare for disasters, with an emphasis on those from communities that are disproportionately affected by all-hazard events. Older adults, especially those who live alone, have low income, or disabilities, or reside in rural areas, often face greater risks during extreme weather events and emergencies.
To support this initiative, emergency managers and organizations working with older adult communities and individuals with disabilities can access online info and videos at Ready.gov/older-adults.
It is valuable to spread the word about National Preparedness Month- and to do our part to assist and plan for disasters - to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, is prepared for emergencies. The campaign provides a range of resources, including social media toolkits, graphics, and animated materials, to help individuals and organizations promote preparedness within their communities.
