Peace in my Soul: Spotlight on Christopher Cole

Alumni Spotlight: Christopher Cole
Christopher Cole’s work on his recovery did not stop when he completed Asana Recovery’s Costa Mesa program in November of 2021. Participating in both the Oxford Group and AA Recovery programs, Christopher goes to five to seven meetings a week, sponsors two men in recovery and calls his own sponsor every day.
It’s certainly worth the effort, though.
“My life is 1000% Better now than I could have ever imagined,” Christopher says. “I have a job I love, 14 months of sobriety, real friends and - most importantly - peace in my soul.”
Christopher says he strives to “do better physically, mentally and spiritually every day.” A Team Lead at an information technology company, Christopher still finds plenty of opportunities for fun! He enjoys playing online games with his son, exercising, talking to his best friend Julia, binge-watching TV, hanging out with friends and going to Asana Recovery alumni events.
Christopher considers the relationships he formed at Asana Recovery to be one of the most important aspects of the program. “I made lifelong friends at Asana (Recovery) who don't want anything from me and genuinely care about me. Also, the amazing Asana staff there loved me until I learned to love myself.”
The Biggest Challenges of Recovery
As everyone knows, staying sober (and doing the things required in order to stay sober) is not always easy. For Christopher, the biggest challenges in recovery have been the often-uncomfortable work on himself.
“The most challenging thing by far was submitting my will and getting out of my comfort zone,” Christopher says. He adds that it also wasn’t easy learning to take advice from another man, his sponsor, and to break “those negative patterns that decades of drug addiction had left in my life.”
He adds a note of encouragement to folks early in their recovery journey: “For the new people the first 6 months are the hardest. If you can get past that it's relatively easy!”
